About me

Hello, my name is Antoine Amargier (Antama), a French visual artist born in Paris and currently based in Berlin. Having lived in different regions of France, as well as in Scotland, Thailand, Portugal and Germany, my work has been shaped by different cultures, places and ways of seeing.
For more than ten years, my practice has revolved around one idea: lightness.
To me, lightness is not about escaping reality or seeking positivity. It is an ongoing process of questioning, understanding and letting go. Lightness is not something I possess; it is something I continue to look for. Making art allows me to give form to thoughts that words cannot always express. It is a way of listening to my unconscious, making sense of it, and, ultimately, becoming lighter.
All of my works begin with words: a sentence, a philosophical idea or a simple observation. Words become the first material from which each image grows. After exploring both digital and material-based processes, I gradually returned to a fully physical practice. Today, through painting, drawing and paper cutting, I distill these reflections into images that say as much as possible with as little as possible. Every drawing, painted surface and paper-cut element is created by hand before being assembled into the final composition.
My work explores balance, memory, time, perspective and our relationship with ourselves and the world. Rather than illustrating answers, I seek to create images that invite each viewer to pause, reflect and discover their own meaning.
Alongside a Master's degree in Art Direction and Graphic Design, I developed my artistic practice through independent study and courses in drawing and painting in Paris. My work continues to be guided by reduction, craftsmanship and the belief that simplicity can reveal a form of absolute.
